LXLE Gives Aging Hardware a New Lease on Life LXLE is an ideal distro for out-of-the-box functionality to handle your everyday computing needs.

It's a well-oiled lightweight distribution based on Ubuntu's long-term support releases for Debian and Lubuntu Linux from a community originating in the U.S. The latest version is 14.04.4, released last month.

It runs an optimized LXDE, or Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment, that has a comfortable look and feel with plenty of system settings to tailor its performance to your way of working. LXDE shares a close kinship with the appearance and performance of another lightweight desktop environment, Xfce.

However, LXLE -- short for Lubuntu Extra Life Extension -- taps fewer system resources than Xfce, making it just as fast and a bit more compatible with aging hardware.

Microsoft locks down Cortana: Blocks integration with other browsers, search engines Microsoft is tightening control over Cortana. Only its Microsoft Edge browser and Bing search engine will work with searches initiated through Windows 10’s digital assistant, the company said Thursday.

Microsoft isn’t prohibiting third-party browsers like Opera and Chrome from working with Windows 10, and you can still configure the operating system to launch those browsers by default, when, say, a coworker emails you a link to a Web page. But, if you launch a search via Cortana, only Edge and Bing will be used to complete it, Microsoft said in a blog post.

“Unfortunately, as Windows 10 has grown in adoption and usage, we have seen some software programs circumvent the design of Windows 10 and redirect you to search providers that were not designed to work with Cortana,” Ryan Gavin, the general manager of search and Cortana, wrote. “The result is a compromised experience that is less

Five of the Best Productivity Tools for Linux Operating systems exist so that you can communicate with computer hardware to get things done. On top of the operating system are live applications that make the process of getting things done efficient. That’s where productivity tools come in. What are productivity tools? Naturally, the definition will depend on the angle from which you approach the question. Management productivity is very different from standard office productivity, and it’s the latter I wish to address.

General office productivity tools are those that enable you to work with documents and files and keep an efficient day-to-day work flow. Some might think these tools would be missing from the Linux ecosystem. I am happy to report, the naysayers are wrong.

Let’s take a look at some major productivity tools available for the Linux platform.

Meet the new Ubuntu: A Linux release tailor-made for enterprises Ubuntu Linux 16.04 LTS is now out, and its extended support makes it particularly suitable for businesses. Here's an overview of what you can expect to find.
Ubuntu 16.04, also known as "Xenial Xerus," made its debut on Thursday, bringing businesses a brand-new option in the operating-system world. It's Canonical's sixth Long-Term Support (LTS) version, meaning enterprises can count on support for a full five years. The ".04" signifies its release in April, not that it's a point upgrade.
Ubuntu 16.04 has a new Snap application package format designed to make the OS easier to use across desktop, server, mobile and the Internet of Things. Intended to live alongside Ubuntu's traditional "Deb" format, Snap aims to make it easier to install software from outside Ubuntu's repositories without compromising security or reliability.

Windows 10 Upgrade – The Office Watch View Windows 10 is really popular?
Of course, Windows 10 has been taken up by a lot of people. It’s FREE for heaven’s sake!
Microsoft proudly tells us that Windows 10 has the “fastest Windows adoption -ever” and even has a graph to ‘prove’ it. This ‘graph’ has no values on the X or Y axis let alone independent auditing of whatever numbers are behind it.
The ‘official’ deadline for completing the free upgrade to Windows 10 is 29 July 2016.
It’s generally thought that Microsoft will start charging for Windows 10 after that date. Wiser heads aren’t so sure. It’s in Microsoft’s interests to get people onto Windows 10 and demanding money for something that was once free is a good way to annoy customers.
The deadline serves more to give a sense of urgency to upgrading.
With any Windows upgrade there’s the question of hardware. Is your current computer sufficient to run Windows 10 smoothly ?

Opera is an attractive option for left-behind Chrome users Google announced back in 2015 that the company's Google Chrome web browser would support Microsoft's Windows XP operating throughout 2015 but would drop support shortly thereafter.

It revealed in November 2015 that it made the decision to add Windows Vista, Mac OS X 10.8 and earlier, all 32-bit versions of Linux, Ubuntu 12.04 and Debian 7 to the list of unsupported operating systems.

That time has come, and as of April 2016, all mentioned operating systems are no longer supported by Google Chrome.

Dropbox announces end of Windows XP support Dropbox announced today on the official Help Center website that it plans to end support for Microsoft's Windows XP operating system in the coming months.

Extended support for the Windows XP ended more than two years ago on April 8, 2014 which means that feature, fix or security updates are no longer released for devices running the system (There is a way to still get updates for XP, but it requires Registry changes).

Some companies -- Google or Dropbox for instance -- made the decision back then to continue supporting the XP operating system thanks to its large user base.

While XP is still listed with a sizable share of the market, around 10% currently as of April 2016, companies that supported XP previously have started to drop support. Google Chrome dropped support for XP recently for instance.

Spam Filter Mechanics Spam filters have different modes of operation. Understanding how they work can help you choose which one to use.

These days, the choice of spam filters comes down to Bogofilter and SpamAssassin. Other choices, like DSPAM, are no longer in development. Although a few other choices (e.g., SpamBayes) are available, when an email reader offers a plugin, it is almost always for either Bogofilter or SpamAssassin. However, what is less often discussed is which filter is the best to use in which circumstances.

Instead, most users simply nod solemnly when they read that both involve “Bayesian filtering.” Most of us – including many who use the phrase – have no idea what Bayesian filtering is, but it sounds scientific and reassures us that either choice is acceptable.

In fact, learning that Bogofilter and SpamAssassin are “Bayesian” is useless for choosing between them.

Here's how Windows 10's Ubuntu-based Bash shell will actually work Aimed at developers, Bash brings a complete Linux command line to Windows, but only the command line.

Linux’s Bash shell is coming to Windows, courtesy of a collaboration between Microsoft and Ubuntu-creator Canonical. Type bash into Windows 10’s Start menu, and you’ll be able to instantly get a full Linux command-line environment.

Many developers prefer Linux—and even Mac OS X, which also includes the Bash shell—because of its access to a whole universe of utilities that often don’t work on Windows. Adding the Bash shell to Windows is just another way Microsoft is trying to make Windows more attractive to Linux developers. Remember, Microsoft’s Azure cloud hosting service can run Linux servers, too.

Windows 10's Bash shell can run graphical Linux applications with this trick It's not officially supported, but it's already very easy to use.

Microsoft said it wouldn’t support graphical applications in Bash on Windows. But enterprising geeks like w2qw on Reddit have already figured out how to run graphical applications with Bash on Windows 10. The underlying code is much more capable than Microsoft initially let on.

This is possible because the Bash shell for Windows is more than just a shell. Microsoft built an entire “Windows Subsystem for Linux” that allows Windows 10 to natively run Linux applications, even graphical ones.

The fact that Microsoft now supports SQL Server on Linux isn’t really a technical development -- it’s a business move. Windows comes up third in OS clash behind Apple's OS X and iOS The continued decline of Windows makes Microsoft's job of pivoting to explorations of cross-platform opportunities all the more pressing. The 283 million represents 11.7% of the total of 2.4 billion devices shipped, over 80% of that number smartphones, and the majority of those smartphones running Google's Android. Six months ago,

New Ransomware Infects by Using MS Word Macros Researchers at Carbon Black have discovered a new form of ransomware that uses Microsoft Word macros to infect the target system. The PowerWare attack starts when a macro-enabled Word doc arrives, either through email or some other delivery method. When the victim opens the file, the macros open a PowerShell session, which downloads and executes the malicious code.

According to the blog post at the Carbon Black website, “Traditional ransomware variants typically install new malicious files on the system, which, in some instances, can be easier to detect. PowerWare asks PowerShell, a core utility of current Windows systems, to do the dirty work. By leveraging PowerShell, this ransomware attempts to avoid writing new files to disk and tries to blend in with more legitimate computer activity.”

The attack locks up the user's files and asks for a $500 ransom.

French Government Denounces DNS Transition Plan Paris officials fear the privatization of Internet naming authority

The French government has criticized the plan to move control of the Internet's domain name system from the US government to the non-profit ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). French officials told the leading French newspaper Le Monde that the move will lead to the “privatization of ICANN, not its internationalization.”

The US government has been in the process of passing Internet control to ICANN for some time. Interestingly, American observers tend to think a non-profit would be a fairer and more neutral guardian for the Internet's naming system than a sovereign government would be, but the French authorities appear to believe they (and other international governments) would be on a better footing to negotiate directly with the Washington than with a California-based autonomous

Europe is going to kill free software! We got confirmation today from one of the largest router manufacturer that they have begun locking router firmware down due to recent FCC rule changes. This is exactly what the Save Wifi campaign participants had been arguing would happen for the past several months. Despite the FCC unequivocally denying that this was there intention it was irrelevant to the outcome and response of manufacturers to the new rules. The competitiveness of the market and costs of compliance means the only real solution for manufactures to comply is the lock down of there router's firmware. The TP-Link rep went on to say that all future routers would be locked down as a direct result of the rule changes.

Windows 10's pushy upgrade tactics pay off with share growth Two data sources show significant gains by Windows 10 during the stretch when users reported upgrades completing without their approval
Last week, users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 systems began reporting that the automatically-downloaded Windows 10 upgrade had been installed, with an accompanying glut of complaints that they had not had the opportunity to decline the offer, or if they did see a way to reject 10, were stuck in a loop where the demand endlessly reappeared.

In some cases, users were unable to regain control of their machines until they acquiesced and let Windows 10 install.

Although the automatic download of Windows 10 and its upgrading a PC from older OSes has been expected for months -- and was switched on six weeks ago -- the process was supposed to require user approval at some point. Yesterday, Microsoft again confirmed that,

Ubuntu 16.04: Something to Get Excited About It’s been quite some time since the Ubuntu faithful could be seriously excited about a release. With good reason. Security Update MS16-023 installs new Get Windows 10 functionality Mixing security updates with non-security content is never a good idea, but it is particularly worrisome when Microsoft pushes new "get Windows 10" functionality on Windows 7 and 8.1 systems that one cannot get rid of without removing the security update itself as well.

The big, big problem

The main issue with pushing Windows 10 offers this way is that users cannot remove them from their system as KB3146449 does not appear in the list of installed updates for the system as it is integrated into KB3139929.

This means that one would have to remove the security updates as well to get rid of the advertisement for Windows 10 on the computer.

Obviously, not using Internet Explorer would resolve the issue as well, but this may not always be possible and only a temporary solution as Microsoft may be inclined to push Windows 10 offers to other programs or tools of the operating system

Microsoft is bringing its SQL Server to Linux Hell isn't freezing over: Microsoft is continuing its love affair with open source

Skype for Linux Breaks. People Blame Microsoft. Are We Surprised? Microsoft declared its love for Linux more than a year ago. But some open source fans have not been feeling much love from Redmond in the wake of reports that the newest version of Skype for Linux doesn't really work, and Microsoft is doing little to fix the problem.

A version of Skype has been available for Linux for many years. It hasn't always had as many features as the versions for Windows and OS X, and it has never been open source, but it has worked well enough if you want to use it to make video or voice calls on Linux.

Kiddle: Google-powered safe search engine for children .Kiddle is a new search engine that has been designed as a safe search engine for children.

It is usually not a good idea to leave children, especially young ones, alone with a device that is connected to the Internet as there is a lot of weird and outright disturbing stuff on the Internet that can shock even adults that are Internet veterans.

Even harmless search terms like eat, big or Inspector Gadget may return results that are not suitable for minors, and it does not really matter if you are next to your child when that happens or not, as you'd probably not expect explicit results to be returned for these types of searches

Search engines try to filter out results by enabling Safe Search filters by default which filter explicit content before results are returned to the user.

LOCKY – THE LATEST OFFICE RANSOMWARE The latest ransomware going the rounds is 'Locky' and arrives via email as a Word document.

Currently the email arrives with a subject like: ATTN: Invoice K-56463223

The message: Please see the attached invoice (Microsoft Word Document) and remit payment according to the terms listed at the bottom of the invoice

Attached is a Word document – notably with a .DOC extension. If you open that document and then follow the request to enable macros, your computer gets ransomed.

Most of the documents on your computer AND attached network shares are encrypted. For many businesses, that means everything. Even Volume Shadow copy files are deleted. File History backups (Windows 8 and 10) will also be encrypted.

To get your files back, you have to pay 0.5 Bitcoins (about US$220)

Microsoft: No New Versions After Windows 10 According to a Microsoft executive, Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows to get an official name.

The 'Last Version of Windows'

That news comes via Microsoft's Jerry Nixon, speaking at the company's massive Ignite conference in Chicago last week. Network World quoted him as saying "Right now we're releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we're all still working on Windows 10."

Once Windows 10 is released, it will be updated on a regular basis, like a typical software program -- although, given how huge it is and how many computers it impacts, it almost certainly won't be updated on, say, a monthly or quarterly basis. That would be too disruptive to users.

Tech Support Scammers Lure Users With Fake Norton Warnings, Turn Out To Be Symantec Reseller Fraudulent tech support companies are well-known for taking advantage of unsavvy computer users by reeling them in with scare tactics and charging large amounts of money for bogus services

In many cases, these crooks sell free security products (or straight up pirate them) for hundreds of dollars more than their actual retail price. Security vendors may not be aware of these practices let alone what kind of sales pitch scammers use to force those sales.

In one of the worst cases of abuse we have seen so far, a company that happens to be an active member of the Symantec Partner Program is scamming people with fake warnings designed to look like Symantec’s flagship product, Norton Antivirus.

5 Live Linux Desktop Distributions You Should Know Linux is such a unique beast. The flagship open source platform does things no other operating system can do. Case in point...the live distribution. What is a live distribution? Simple. By running completely from RAM, a live Linux distribution allows you to run a full instance of the operating system (from either CD/DVD or USB) without making changes to your current system.

What does this mean to you? It means you can either use a live distribution to test whether Linux is right for you, or you can carry around a Linux distribution to use at your discretion. Don’t want to boot into a Windows computer? Fine. Pull out your trusty live Linux USB drive and boot up your distribution of choice.

ANOTHER OFFICE PATCH FAIL This is now beyond a joke. Yet another month with a broken patch for Microsoft Office.

The February 2016 broken patch is known as KB3114717, after the Knowledge Base article. It applies only to Office 2013 installed via MSI (ie DVD or direct download) and not a 'click to run' installs (usually Office 365 annual rental). It also applies to Office RT for original Surface devices with Windows RT.

If you were unlucky enough to have this patch installed, your copy of Office might grind to a halt. Office takes up virtually all the computer processor power (CPU) leaving little for the computer to do any work.

After the usual complaints on forums, Microsoft did something quite amazing …. They put a notice on the top of the KB page.

Linux Mint Website Hacked, ISOs Compromised With Backdoor Absolute security is a myth. And this has been proved once again with Linux Mint website being hacked.

Hackers managed to hack the website and replace the download links of some Linux Mint ISOs to their own, modified ISOs with a backdoor in it. Users who downloaded these compromised ISOs are at risk of hacking attacks.
Don’t panic. Not just now. The hacking attack has compromised ISOs but not all of them.

Only Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon edition ISOs that were downloaded on 20th February are the victim. Rest are fine

Google Is Ending Chrome support for 32-bit Linux, Ubuntu 12.04 And Debian 7 If you have a 32 bit computer or if you are running Ubuntu 12.04 or Debian 7 (even the 64 bit version), then you would be disappointed to know that Google Chrome will no longer be supported on these systems.
To provide the best experience for the most-used Linux versions, we will end support for Google Chrome on 32-bit Linux, Ubuntu Precise (12.04), and Debian 7 (wheezy) in early March, 2016. Chrome will continue to function on these platforms but will no longer receive updates and security fixes.

We intend to continue supporting the 32-bit build configurations on Linux to support building Chromium. If you are using Precise, we’d recommend that you to upgrade to Trusty.

Slimjet: An Alternative Browser If you are using Google Chrome on a 32 bit Linux system or a Linux distro based on Ubuntu 12.04 (even 64-bit ones) such as Linux Mint 13, it is time for you to switch to another web browser.

The first and obvious choice is Mozilla Firefox but if you were using Google Chrome, chances are that you might not like Firefox.

What other choices do we have then? Popular suggestion would be to go for Chromium browser, the open source project from which Google Chrome is derived. While Chromium is a good alternative, I would like to suggest another alternative, Slimjet.

Slimjet is a web browser based on Chromium project. However, Slimjet is NOT open source. As the name indicates, Slimjet focuses on speed and is slimmer (lightweight).

In keeping with the Document Foundation’s time-based release schedule, this latest release comes six months after LibreOffice 5.0—and will be followed by another release in six months’ time.

Curious Case Of Linux Distribution Code Names Have you ever wondered about the code name of the latest release of your favorite Linux distribution?

The upcoming Linux Mint 18 has been codenamed Sarah. Ubuntu 16.04 will be called Xenial Xerus. The list goes on like that.

The question about the code-names is really trivial. It doesn’t make any difference to how a particular Linux distribution function. Yet, as a curious Linux user, you might want to know the logic behind codename of a release. After all, the code name is an integral part of a release and the dev team puts an effort for that as well, isn’t it?

Bogus Windows Support Technicians The classic tactic involves cold calls -- unsolicited telephone calls -- where callers pose as computer support technicians, frequently from Microsoft itself, and try to convince victims that their computers are infected, often by having them look at Windows' Event Viewer, a log that shows scores of harmless errors. At that point, the hard-sell pitch starts, with the caller urging the consumer to download software or let the "technician" remotely access the PC.

The con artists charge for their bogus "help" and often get people to pay hundreds for worthless support plans or software. Frequently, the scammers use their access to plant malware on the PC, which later surreptitiously harvests online account information and passwords, or they steal files from the system during the call,
